The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls track and field team used depth Monday to win the Lions Invitational in Wittenberg.
The Chargers girls won just two events but had plenty of athletes place to outpace second-place Wausau Newman Catholic and third-place Peshtigo.
“I was a little surprised,” Wittenberg-Birnamwood coach Mike Balliett said. “We went against Newman Catholic last week and Peshtigo earlier in the year, and both times both teams have beaten us.”
Micah Nier won the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 8.5 inches for Witt-Birn. She also took second in the triple jump and third in the high jump.
Mikayla Hartman, Katie Norrbom, Chyara Zeinert and Maykayla Verkuilen won the 4x100-meter relay, beating out the second-place Tigerton team of Lonna Minniecheske, Karli Minniecheske, Charity Desrochers and Sara Shumaker.
“I don’t think any of our girls had a really great meet,” Balliett said. “But we had a lot of depth. In a lot of events we got one or two places in.”
Tigerton’s girls finished fifth.
In the boys meet, the Chargers finished third behind Newman Catholic and Peshtigo.
Aaron Monnot earned the Chargers’ only win, going 40-7 to take first in the triple jump. He also placed third in the 200 dash and fifth in the 500.
“Aaron has been jumping pretty well,” Balliett said. “The problem we’ve been having with Aaron is trying to keep him healthy.”
Monnot is dealing with a stress fracture, which is limiting his workload.
The coach was impressed by Riley Bohman, who took second in the 3,200 and set a personal record. His time of 11:15.99 was almost 12 seconds faster than his time Thursday.
“He shaved a bunch of time off his run the meet before,” Balliett said. “He’s really been running well the last couple of meets.”
Mason Enjaian, who took second in the shot put and fifth in the discus, also had a good day, Balliett said.
“We didn’t have anyone that really set the world on fire, we were just really consistent,” Balliett said. “We had the depth tonight, more than anything else.”
Jacob Minniecheske led the Tigers with a second-place finish in the long jump. He jumped 18-1. The Tigerton boys finished seventh as a team.
