The Shawano Area Writers presented awards for the first George Putz Memorial Writing Contest to the next generation of writers May 10 at Shawano City Hall.
The group presented 38 awards to children in Shawano County who stood out from almost 230 entries received this year. The contest was divided into three grade divisions: 1-4, 5-8 and 9-12. Each division was divided into three categories: fiction, nonfiction and poetry.
Neenah author Julie Mata, who has penned the children’s book “Kate Walden Directs: Night of the Zombie Chickens,” was the featured speaker. She explained how she became a published author and encouraged the student winners to continue writing.
The award winners are as follows:
Grades 1-4

The contest, which was revived after a seven-year absence, was named for the late George Putz, a Shawano County resident who left the Shawano Area Writers more than $77,000 in his estate. The caveat was that the money had to be used in a writing contest or to promote writing.
