Bowler Elementary School
GiiTaa’se Singers of Bowler visited kindergarten through second-graders at Bowler Elementary recently to give a cultural presentation, focusing on pow-wows and other related activities. The leaders of the singers, Gordie and Patricia Williams, are proud grandparents in the district. The group travels around the state giving similar presentations.
Sacred Heart Catholic School
As the school year draws to a close, we here at Sacred Heart Schools are excited to be able to celebrate our eighth-grade graduation. It will be held during the 10:45 a.m. Mass on June 1, with a short reception and program to follow for the graduates and their families. The seventh-grade families will be hosting the reception.
Students from fifth to eighth grade will be building egg protectors. There will be an egg drop at 2:15 p.m. Thursday to see who built the lightest project and had their egg survive. The classes will be observing the egg drop, and parents are also encouraged to attend.
The fifth- and sixth-grade classes recently went on a field trip sponsored by the Manitowoc County Civil War Round Table. Our students were invited to be Confederate soldiers and participate in a battle re-enactment. They had lessons on the use of cannons, guns, marching, clothing warn at the time, sleeping outside in pup tents, and a taste of hard tack. The “injured” soldiers were treated with field dressings by the student nurses, and the sentries stood guard as the battle took place. Each child had a very active role in the learning of what the Civil War was truly like.
Tuesday, there was raking and garbage clean-up at our school, led by the student council. We continued on in the afternoon to have a student versus teacher game out in our newly cleaned parking area. The enjoyable game was a great reward for the hard work the students did in their cleaning.
This week, the classes had their last swim class for the year. For the last four weeks the students looked forward to their time in the pool with great anticipation. We would like to thank Sue Kenfield for helping arrange our swim classes this year, as well as our parent volunteers who also participated.
Our school begins each week with a prayer service that is prepared by the students. It gives all of us the correct focus for our learning to take place for the week. We also end each week with a prayer service that is also prepared by the students. It prepares us for busy weekends that are before us, and reminds us that our focus should be on celebrating God at Mass as we go about our weekend.
Bonduel Elementary School
The fourth-graders celebrated Earth Day a little late this year. On April 30, both Nicole Suehring’s and Traci Steinbach’s classes ventured outside to plant trees in the school forest. Luckily, the rain stopped and the sun even peeked out for a while. The students each planted a white pine seedling. The seedlings were donated by the Wisconsin Natural Resources Department. The students enjoyed digging the holes and finding slugs and grubs in the dirt. The classes also did a Writer’s Workshop project for Earth Day. They had to create an invitation to an Earth Day event. Some of the events included planting trees, cleaning up litter, recycling and reusing objects found in the garbage, and even creating posters to hang around town to remind people not to litter and to conserve energy. Their invitations turned out wonderfully.
