The Shawano County University of Wisconsin-Extension office will be running six strength-training classes this fall.
Registration is open for the Strong Bones Program classes that start the week of Sept. 8 and run through Nov. 21.
Four classes will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano. Classes also will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bonduel and at the Swedberg Funeral Home in Gresham.
The Strong Bones Program was developed by Dr. Miriam Nelson and Dr. Rebecca Sequin at Tufts University in Massachusetts. It includes progressive weight training, flexibility and balance activities. The exercises are safe and effective for both men and women of all ages, including those who are not in perfect health.
People with health concerns such as arthritis, heart disease, osteoporosis diabetes, obesity and back pain often benefit the most from an exercise program.
The class will use dumbbells, ankle weights and exercise mats. Participants are urged to wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
All of the local instructors have received training with the Strong Bones Program.
The cost of the program is $25. Preregistration is encouraged, but participants also may register at the first class. For registration or information, call 715-526-6136 or email Kara.skarlupka@co.shawano.wi.us.
