Nellie A. Kessen

Nellie A. Kessen, 91, Birnamwood, died on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at Bohlman Manor, Birnamwood, under the care of her family and Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. She was born on Jan. 27, 1923, in the town of Rosendale, Fond du Lac County, the daughter of the late William “Fred” and Clara (Wegner) Pietz. Nellie was raised on the Pietz family farm and was the youngest of 12 siblings. On Aug. 10, 1940, Nellie was united in marriage to Harris Kessen in Birnamwood. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2007. The couple worked at Ladish Drop Forge Co., Cudahy, making war materials during World War II. They then moved to Bowler and farmed the Kessen home farm, and also owned and operated Kessen’s Restaurant and Bar, Bowler. She was an excellent cook, enjoyed playing Bingo and cards with her friends. Nellie was also an avid Milwaukee Brewers fan. She was a good and faithful servant, and enjoyed reading her Portals of Prayer daily. Nellie was a full-time homemaker, mother and grandmother, and will be missed. Survivors include four sons, the Rev. Clifford (Audrey) Kessen, Tigerton, Larry (Cathy) Kessen, Birnamwood, Richard (friend Pam Daffron) Kessen, Eland, and Tom (Deb) Kessen, Birnamwood; seven grandsons; one granddaughter and numerous great-grandchildren. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings and a daughter-in-law, Pamela Kessen. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Birnamwood. The Rev. Matthew Christians will officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, town of Almon, Shawano County. Visitation will be on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
