The season opener was a short one for the Shawano Community High School boys soccer team, which fell behind 4-0 to nonconference foe Pulaski on Tuesday before a downpour ended the match at halftime.
Shawano coach Bob Croschere said with the loss of 14 seniors from last year, the team must continue to grow as the season gets into full swing.
“We have got to kind of come together as a team,” Croschere said. “This kind of proves that we still have some work to do on that.”
Sloppy conditions did little to slow down Pulaski, which kept possession for most of the half.
Shawano goalie Sajen Knueppel had seven saves on the night, but the constant pressure led to a pair of goals each for Pulaski’s Ryan Hansen and Wesley Folk.
Hansen scored at the 14- and 44-minute marks, and Folk scored at the 26- and 27-minute marks.
The game was called off at halftime after rain left standing water on the field.
Croschere said he wished the Hawks could have gotten into the second half to make some adjustments.
“We could have maybe fixed a few of the things once we got a chance to talk about it,” Croschere said. “We’ll see what happens.”
Shawano will face Pulaski again on Saturday to open a tournament in Rhinelander.
