A monument dedicated to loved ones, many of whom died of cancer, will undergo a transformation in Gillett. A walkway will be constructed at the Memorial Wall, located just south of City Hall in Zippel Park, to create a tranquil spot for reflection.
The Memorial Wall was originally linked to the Relay for Life event, formerly held in Gillett, for the American Cancer Society. Wells Fargo Bank, a Relay for Life supporter, began selling bricks for the wall in 1996 as a way to raise money for cancer research, office manager Julie Meunier said.
“It’s always been a very worthwhile cause,” she said.
Initially the bricks were placed on the ground, but later they were moved to the vertical wall to preserve them better. About 150 bricks have been sold at $100 apiece, and there’s room for another 40 to 50 more. Bricks may be purchased at the Wells Fargo office, 100 E. First St., Gillett. The bricks can be sponsored in memory of or in honor of an individual.
Wells Fargo will contributed $1,000 toward the walkway, with the city of Gillett adding $4,000.
“It’s been a cause that’s been very important to our staff here at the bank,” Meunier said.
The walkway will be made of stamped concrete, and benches will be added. Meunier said it will create a restful place for individuals to sit and read the bricks. Plus, it will be easier for the city to clip the grass and maintain the area around the wall.
The work is scheduled to be done this summer.
Meunier said brick sales have slowed in recent years. She was hopeful the effort to improve the monument will prompt individuals to sponsor a brick as a way to memorialize someone special in their lives, while helping the American Cancer Society at the same time.
