Gillett baseball team remains winless
Gillett High School lost 8-2 to Crivitz on May 8 despite a 2-for-2 performance by Eric Fischer and two runs scored by Bryce Cibulka.
Third baseman Derek Zahn was 1-for-4 for the Tigers (0-9, 0-7 Marinette & Oconto Conference).
The Wolverines improved to 4-6, 4-5 M&O.
STAA claims top spot at invitational
Nines were wild as St. Thomas Aquinas finished first by nine strokes in a nine-hole invitational among nine teams at Parkway Golf Club on May 8.
Michael Schmidt of STAA was the meet’s medalist with a round of 37, two strokes better than teammate Casey Boyle.
Suring High School took fourth with Anthony Jazwiecke, tying Boyle for second place. Dillon Kemper (43) took eighth.
Behind a sixth-place individual finish by Travis Borchert (42), Lena took fourth. Second on the Lena team was Cole Huberty with 52.
Gillett tied for last with Peshtigo, and John Christensen was the Tigers’ top finisher with a 71.
STAA/Lena gets 1st win of season
Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas got its first wins of the softball season Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Stephenson, 12-5 and 13-3.
Lena/STAA (2-5, 0-3 Marinette & Oconto Conference) scored eight runs in the bottom of the third in the first game. Every batter scored at least once for Lena/STAA in the game, including two by third baseman Linsey Hannon, leftfielder Alexis Henry and centerfielder Haylee Lee. Pitcher Sarah Porras allowed five runs through seven innings in a complete game.
Hannon, who went 1-for-4, scored three runs in the second game. Melissa Bushmaker added three more runs and had two hits. Henry collected a hit and scored twice while drawing two of the team’s 14 walks.
Porras struck out five batters in two innings before giving way to Kayla Boye for the final two innings.
STAA/Lena falls to Sevastopol
STAA/Lena (2-5, 0-3 Marinette & Oconto Conference) was unable to carry the momentum of a doubleheader sweep of Stephenson on Thursday into Friday’s nonconference softball game with Sevastopol.
Despite a five-run seventh inning, STAA/Lena (2-5, 0-3 Marinette & Oconto Conference) fell 7-6.
Riley Schultz, Brooke Peterson, Alyssa Hornick, Hayle Le and Melissa Bushmaker scored for Lena/STAA.
