Wally Saffran, of Oconto Falls, experienced a whirlwind tour of Washington, D.C., with the Old Glory Honor Flight on May 8. A group of 57 veterans of World War II and the Korean War took the flight.
Saffran served in the Army during the Korean War.
He joined other Korean War veterans in touring the Korean War Memorial, while the World War II veterans toured their memorial. Saffran’s group also visited the Roosevelt Memorial, the Iwo Jima Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where they observed the changing of the guard, and the memorial honoring women in the service.
When they returned to the airport in Appleton, more than 500 people, many of them waving flags, welcomed them back with cheers.
The Old Glory Honor Flight, funded totally by donations, is offered free to veterans. DVDs at the Oconto Falls Library show what this organization is doing for veterans.
