Repeat winner at Kelly Lake Triathlon

For the second straight year, Ryne Scopp, 20, of Kenosha, captured the male overall championship in the fourth annual Kelly Lake Triathlon held Saturday in Suring. “(Scopp) blew everybody out of the water,” organizer Roger Bloom said. “He was miles ahead of the competition. We couldn’t keep up with him.” Scopp’s time of 1 hour, 12 minutes was seven minutes faster than Sherwood’s Greg Ryan, who placed second. Lace Luedke, of Menasha, was the top female runner with a time of 1 hour, 30 minutes and 15th overall among 105 competitors. Scopp will be a senior this fall at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, where he competes in cross-country and track. It was his third appearance at the Kelly Lake Triathlon. He also has competed in other triathlons, including the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon near his hometown of Kenosha and the Aurora BayCare Triathlon in Green Bay, where he placed second. “Swimming is the most boring of the three, just swimming in laps,” he said. “I have the most experience in biking and running.” Mady Scopp, Ryne’s sister, finished first in the 18-39 age group, clocking in at 1 hour, 45 minutes. Her time was one minute better than Deanna Dercks, of Kimberly. Mike Jovanavich, of Neenah, captured his third consecutive men’s masters title. Terri Weninger, of Waukesha, won the female masters division. Burke’s Irish Castle, of Milwaukee, won the team relay, which consisted of three athletes, one for each portion of the triathlon. The event drew 134 participants, including 19 relay teams. Participants came from eight states, including Florida, Virginia and Washington. Bloom expects to donate more than $1,000 from the proceeds to Shriners Hospitals-Chicago, which specializes in the treatment of children with disabilities — regardless of family income. “We met our goals of having a fun and safe race bringing the Kelly Lake community together, while raising money and awareness for a worthy cause,” Bloom said.
