Our Gillett Public Library director, Kay Rankel, the Gillett Public Library staff, Library Board and Friends of the Gillett Public Library have been researching for quite some time how to obtain space to increase library functions and meet needs in our community.
They have, without use of community tax dollars, obtained the former bank building adjacent to the library. In addition to library use, the plan is to expand the property use to provide a much-needed community events facility.
Approximately $10,000 is needed to further the changeover from bank to community center. While fundraising events are wonderful, they take time to plan and prepare and not 100 percent of the money raised gets to the actual need.
So, I challenge all of us to donate just $10 to the community center project. Less than the amount of two lunches or a round of beers at a local pub can be given directly to the community center at the Gillett Public Library.
There are more than 1,300 residents of the city of Gillett and a few thousand more in the surrounding townships whose residents patronize the library. If only 1,000 of us contribute $10 each (tax deductible, by the way), the needed amount can be easily raised.
