Oconto Falls Legion sends 2 to all-star game

Hunter Magnin and Bo Shroyer will represent the Oconto Falls American Legion baseball team Saturday at the Fox River Valley All-Star game at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton. Magnin and Shroyer were selected by a FRV committee to the American Conference squad, slated to play at noon. All of the conference teams were guaranteed to have at least one player, and no more than two, named to an all-star squad. Magnin (6-3) struck out 76 FRV batters, including 15 at Shawano during the regional opener July 24, and led the FRV-North with a 1.98 ERA. In back-to-back shutouts, the recent Oconto Falls High School graduate struck out 12 Oconto hitters July 10 and later notched a seven-strikeout performance against Menominee, Michigan. Magnin also contributed at the plate, with a .353 batting average and six RBIs. He played in the outfield when not on the mound. Coach Chris Hillberg said a change in batting styles prior to the season set up Shroyer’s all-star selection. “He tweaked his mechanics and really solidified our third spot in the lineup,” Hillberg said. Shroyer was instrumental in Oconto Falls’ 7-6 victory over Niagara on July 12, when he belted a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Shroyer knocked in 14 runs, tabulated a .345 batting average and slugged at a .448 clip during the Legion season. Tickets for the game are $5, with a banquet to honor the all-stars later in the day. Tickets for the banquet are $15.
