Kallie Rank, the 2014 Oconto County Fairest of the Fair, represented Oconto County at the Wisconsin State Fairest of the Fairs annual convention from Jan. 4-7 in Wisconsin Dells. Competitors from more than 40 counties participated.
The state Fairest of the Fair hosts the Wisconsin State Fair in August and markets Wisconsin fairs throughout the year.
Rank had the honor of selling several auction items at the state competition. All proceeds were returned to the state program. Local sponsors were Rank, Meunier’s True Value of Gillett, The Boarding House Supper Club of Suring, and Riesterer & Schnell.
The Oconto County Fairest of the Fair Committee, for a second year, will combine the junior and senior fairest contests for 2015. The contest will be held April 11 at Oconto Falls High School. There will be a reception open to the public, along with an on-stage program.
To be eligible for the Oconto County Senior Fairest of the Fair, contestants must be at least 18 years old by Jan. 1, 2016, and residents of Oconto County. Contestants are required to obtain a sponsor and submit an entry form and essay by March 1.
For the 2015 junior fairest competition, contestants must be 11-13 years old as of April 11, 2015. The contest is open to Oconto County residents who are current county fair exhibitors. Junior fairest contestants are required to obtain a sponsor and submit an entry form and essay by March 1.
Applications and essays will be reviewed by judges the day of the competition. Contestants will participate in individual and group interviews, provide an introduction and event announcement, and answer impromptu questions.
The senior and junior Fairest of the Fair work together to promote the Oconto County Fair throughout the year at various community events. Contestants are able to develop public speaking, interviewing and marketing skills.
