A massive church bell thought to be more than 100 years old will soon take on a yet undetermined new role. The bell, which for generations called worshipers to service at the now closed Abrams Methodist Church, was recently removed from the structure.
A little over six years ago the vacant church property was purchased by the Oconto Falls School District to provide an expanded parking area and a revised entrance to Abrams Elementary School. That project is moving forward this spring. One of the first steps in that process was the demolition of the building through a training partnership with the Abrams Fire Department.
Before that could happen, the bell needed to be removed. A crew from Our Own Construction was assigned the task and gently removed the bell, along with the supporting structure.
The school district is accepting sealed bids for the bell but has reserved the right to reject all bids with the understanding that another option might be selected as the bell moves into its second century of service in a new location.
