Society to show how to preserve family history

The Oconto County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, April 20, at the Oconto Falls Community Library, 251 N. Main St. On April 20, the OCGS will share examples of how to preserve family history, and participants are invited to bring their samples of family history writings and scrapbooks. The OCGS will meet at 5:30 p.m. May 19 in the auditorium of the Brown County Library, 515 Pine St., Green Bay, for a program titled “Finding Ancestors, Genealogical DNA Basics.” Parking may be hard to find, so members are encouraged to come early. The presentation will cover the history of genealogical DNA, the types of tests, companies who offer testing, and websites that can provide help with the data. The presentation is by Kathie Laprise. In June, July and August, OCGS members will work in cemeteries, cleaning and photographing headstones and adding the geographical location of these stones to the OCGS website, which has a searchable database for Oconto County and some Shawano and Marinette county cemeteries.
