Auditions set for ‘Shrek the Musical’

Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. will hold open auditions for its next musical, “Shrek The Musical.” Auditions are scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, and Thursday, Jan. 14, at The Byng Community Theater, 5852 Maple St., Abrams. The production is based on the book by William Steig and on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film. “Shrek The Musical” is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure featuring songs from Jeanine Tesori (“Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Caroline or Change”) and a book by David Lindsay-Abaire. “Shrek” brings all the beloved characters from the film to life on stage. “Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek. …” And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand, and his name is Shrek. Actors age 8 and older are welcome to audition. They are asked to prepare an upbeat song from a musical to sing, but not a song from “Shrek The Musical.” Individuals at the audition will learn and perform a dance routine in small groups. Actors must audition in order to be in the show; no late entries will be allowed. Rehearsals will generally be held on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning in January. Show dates are from April 15-17 and April 22-24. Actors are asked to consider their availability for all rehearsals and show dates and their level of commitment before auditioning. Backstage and front-of -house crew members are needed as well. For information, call Brandon Byng at 920-826-5852.
