Wisconsin had 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork statewide for the week ending Aug. 23, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Dry conditions continued to affect crops, especially in northwestern portions of the state. Snap beans were being harvested, and some farmers started on their fourth cutting of hay.
Topsoil moisture condition rated 14% very short, 27% short, 58% adequate and 1% surplus.
Subsoil moisture condition rated 10% very short, 26% short, 63% adequate and 1% surplus.
Corn in the dough stage reached 70% compared to the 5-year average of 69%. Corn in the dent stage reached 19%. Corn condition was 65% good to excellent, down 2 percentage points from last week.
Soybeans setting pods reached 91% compared to the average of 87%. Soybean condition was 63% good to excellent, down 3 percentage points from last week.
Oats were 83% harvested compared to the average of 77%.
The third cutting of alfalfa hay was 92 percent complete compared to the average of 87%.
Pasture and range condition was 48% good to excellent, down 3 percentage points from last week.
