Heavy rains and flooding on April 12-13 and beyond led to several area culverts being washed out and roads closed due to high water.
The city of Shawano was no exception. A culvert washed out on East Richmond Street east of South Airport Drive, and it cost the city $5,000 to repair it.
However, state disaster aid will help cover much of that cost.
At the May 13 Shawano Common Council meeting, aldermen approved a resolution seeking reimbursement.
“This is really the extent of our public flooding issues that we had,” City Administrator Eddie Sheppard said. “We had a culvert wash out on Richmond Street, and as being part of a disaster declaration area, if you have any damage to your public infrastructure related to the flooding, you’re eligible for 75% replacement costs plus 50% of the increased cost to reconstruct it.”
Sheppard said that because of the dam at Sturgeon Park, most of the city’s waterways area are not in the floodplain.
