Shawano County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Ostrowski has been chosen as the new K-9 handler for the department.
He will travel to Canada later this year for a two-week training session with his new dog.
The Shawano County Public Safety Committee authorized his trip at its Sept. 4 meeting.
Lt. Nick Prey said the county has already purchased a couple of dogs from the same vendor, Tony Pallotta, of Toronto. Exact training dates have yet to be set, but Prey said they will probably be in early to mid-November.
“They will do all the training for the dog and the handler,” he said. “SOS (Supporters of Shawano K-9) will handle the hotel or arrangements for living. Meals usually are provided one meal a day by the trainer, and we’ll pay for the dog and the training. As a county, we don’t have a lot of investment other than his wage.”
With the retirement of Arres this summer, the sheriff’s department found itself in the market for a second K-9.
SOS K-9 is a nonprofit, community-run organization dedicated to the continued existence and advancement of the sheriff’s department K-9 division. The group is accepting donations to assist with the purchase of equipment, training opportunities and supplies needed to successfully assist the sheriff’s department’s two law enforcement K-9s.
