Rehearsals for the second offering of the Machickanee Players’ 40th season, Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” are proceeding. The play, an original script by Greg “Captain” Holbus, deals with themes of alienation, abandonment and becoming how others perceive you.
‘Mary Shelley’s novel is, in my opinion, one of the greatest pieces of literature ever written,” Holbus said. “I’ve seen a lot of adaptations on television and film, but none have been faithful to the novel. I felt that it was important to produce a version of the story as close to the original as possible.
“Stories that force people to reckon with the obscenely judgmental nature of humanity interest me. In ‘Frankenstein,’ we see a gentle and thoughtful creature – beautiful on the inside but hideous on the outside – driven to hate and cruelty by human beings who are beautiful on the outside but hideous on the inside.”
Victor Frankenstein will be portrayed by Travis Rysewyk, the Creature by Jamie “Bones” Braunsdorf, Adam Rienke is Captain Robert Walton, and Jenny Warpehski-Fulcher is Elizabeth Lavenia.
Several actors play a number of roles, and they are Alfred Osmon portraying the First Officer, William Frankenstein, Henry Clerval and Felix; Suzie Mozey is Mary Shelley, Margaret Saville, Caroline Beaufort and the Creature’s Mate; Jahn Mozey will be Alphonse Frankenstein and M. Krempe; Arissa Dakins is Agatha and Justine Moritz; and Jon Bornemann plays M. Waldman, Dr. Seward, Dr. Lacey and the Magistrate.
Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” will be performed at the Park Avenue Theatre, 408 Park Ave., Oconto, Feb 9-11, Feb 16-18, with a special Valentine’s Day showing on Feb 14. Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 p.m., and dinner, catered by the Wooden Spoon on Main, is available for an additional price. Sunday shows, which start at 2 p.m., offer pie, also for an additional price.
Posters of the show will be for sale at each performance, where the actors will autograph them.
