One person died as the result of a fire that occurred May 6 in the 200 block of East Center Street in Shawano.

Emergency personnel responded shortly before 7 p.m. to reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews observed smoke coming from the home.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and conduct search efforts within the residence. During those efforts, a person was located inside the home.

Ronald Breaker, a pioneering biochemist and longtime leader in the sciences at Yale, has been named the next dean of science in Yale’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Breaker is a 1982 graduate of Tigerton High School.

Breaker will begin a five-year term July 1.

Wisconsin had 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork statewide for the week ending May 3, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Where fields were dry enough, manure spreading, spring tillage and fertilizer applications took place. Planting of soybeans and corn continued, although soil temperatures remain on the cool side.

Efforts to improve Shawano Community High School are going to be kicking into high gear in May, as some of the projects are coming to completion while much of the work will begin in earnest now that winter has ended.

A one-acre pond might not be a big deal to most people, but that’s not the case in one Shawano County village.

Eland is doing what it can to preserve Eland Mill Pond, an impoundment of Railroad Creek.

The dam that forms the pond is in need of repair, and the village just started a fundraising effort to come up with $100,000 for the project.

Road construction is underway on County Road BE between Shawano and Bonduel, complete with detours drivers will need to plan around in the coming weeks.

The road will be closed to through traffic until June 1, with access limited to local residents and businesses along the route. County Road BE is not meant to be used as a corridor, only for people who live there or need to reach businesses.
