Those who served in the armed forces will be remembered at Memorial Day services around the area.
Oconto Falls
Oconto Falls Elementary School Principal Daniel Moore will speak at the 10 a.m. service at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oconto Falls. The Eick-Sankey American Legion Post 302 and Legion Auxiliary will conduct the service.
Gillett
In Gillett, a Memorial Day procession will begin at Gillett School, 208 W. Main St., at 9:45 a.m. and end at the Memorial Lot on West Main Street. John Wolfe, a Gillett native and past Ninth District commander of the American Legion, will be the guest speaker at the service, which begins at 10 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held in the auditorium at Gillett Secondary School. A potluck lunch will follow at Lone Oak Gun Club.
Suring
In the Suring area, American Legion Post 283 will conduct cemetery services at 9 a.m. at St. Michael’s, 10 a.m. at St. John’s at Pleasant Hill, 10:30 a.m at Breed Central, 11 a.m. at Woodland Nursing Home, 11:45 a.m. at Frostville Cemetery and 2 p.m. in Hickory.
Mountain
The Zitske-Estabrook VFW Post 2119 of Mountain and Northern Oconto County will hold its Memorial Day ceremony at 9:30 a.m. at the Mountain, Doty, Riverview Cemetery in Mountain. All veterans are welcome and encouraged to march with the VFW. Refreshments will be served after the service at Tabor Lutheran Church, next to the cemetery.
Lena
Doney-DeGrave American Legion Post 342 will celebrate Memorial Day with a 10 a.m. parade on Lena’s Main Street. Legionnaires and veterans who wish to march in the parade should be at the Legion Hall on Main Street by 9:30 a.m. A program at St. Charles Cemetery east of Lena will include music by the high school band and choir, directed by Hilary Oskey. The Badger Girl and Badger Boy representatives will present readings. Guest speaker will be veteran Russell Buhr. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the Lena High School gym.
Spruce
The Doney-DeGrave American Legion Post 342 will hold services at the Pine Hill Cemetery north of Spruce at 11:15 a.m. The service will include a speaker, songs and readings. A roll of the veterans buried in area cemeteries and overseas will be read. In the event of rain, the service will be held at the Spruce Town Hall.
Wabeno
American Legion Sylvan Post 44 will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 10:45 a.m. at Veterans Park in Wabeno. Chuck Enders, U.S. Army veteran, will be the guest speaker. All veterans, their families and the public are invited. Because of limited parking available at the park, a shuttle bus will be provided at the Wabeno Town Hall and the Legion post starting at 9:30 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at Wabeno High School.
