MaryAnn Genke, our tiny, broken, sweet mom, passed away on Aug. 27, 2013. She is now free of pain and walking hand and hand with God.
She was born in Milwaukee on Aug. 21, 1924, to Walter and Charlotte Niemann. She married Gilbert Genke on July 3, 1948. Together they had four children.
MaryAnn was a beautiful dressmaker and seamstress and worked for the Women’s Exchange, where she created specialty clothing. She also sewed all of her children’s clothes and her own for many years. She also had a passion for cooking, and in the late 1960s moved to Mountain and ran the Tailgate Restaurant for many years.
When rheumatoid arthritis destroyed her body, she loved reading cooking magazines and loved watching cooking shows. She also loved her church, going out to eat, especially Red Lobster, shopping, and even though her feet were so terribly deformed from arthritis, she still loved shoes—as do her grandchildren. But mostly she loved her family!
She is survived by her children, Neil (Vicki) Genke, David (Michelle) Genke and Sharlene (Mike) Kresse. Our brother, Larry, passed away in 1982. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Scott (Stephi) Genke, Teressa (Terry) Walsh, Kyle and Catherine Genke, Chris and Kristin Kresse; great-grandchildren, Terry, Joe, Trenton and Nate; and her buddy, granddog, Katie.
Mom, you suffered so much but always had a smile for us when we walked through the door. You were the definition of sweetness, and we will forever be grateful God gave you to us to be our mom.
A gathering of family and friends was held on Sunday, Sept. 1, at the Lakewood Presbyterian Church. Memorial services were held Sunday, Sept. 1, with Dick Kendall officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Mountain Cemetery.

Very heartfelt thanks to Woodland Village Nursing home. The staff is more than extraordinary. Also, to Woodland Home Health Care for the many years of loving care, especially Lori, but you were all wonderful, and we are eternally grateful.
