The Clintonville Airport Commission learned this week that the city airport is busy and has no empty hangars.
“The airport is the one department or area in the city that can fund itself,” Mike McCord, airport manager, told the Airport Commission on Monday.
McCord said a new tenant is building a hangar, there are people who want to buy hangars and land is available to rent for 13 cents a square foot for plane owners who want to build hangars. Also, improvements are planned for one of the airport’s runways.
McCord said 30 planes stopped at the airport in one recent day. Many of them stopped for fuel. Jet fuel and L lead fuel are available at attractive prices, McCord said.
Another of the airport’s attractions is that tie down service is offered at no cost to pilots, McCord said. Radio repair service has been available at the airport for 40 years, he added.
Pilots and passengers also can fuel up during a visit to the airport. McCord noted that some area restaurants will deliver food to the airport and others will provide transportation for visiting pilots.
“My dream is to some day have a restaurant out here and make this a destination,” McCord said.
The biggest project under way is a $1.3 million improvement to the “cross wind” runway. The project is funded by state Department of Transportation entitlement funds, with the city paying 3.5 cents on the dollar. Engineering is being done, and bids are expected to be opened this fall, with construction set for 2014.
