To the editor:
Once again, I had a great experience in Clintonville. Last weekend I had the privilege of taking part in the Lame Ox Festival. Olen Park brought back many happy memories.
Being an August baby, my birthday always meant a large picnic at the park with my family and all my friends and school mates. During the 1940s and ’50s, the shelters and other amenities were yet to come, but picnic tables and stone fireplaces were there for the standard fare of hot dogs and marshmallows.
At one point, Ralph Williams asked if I remembered the name of the bear that inhabited a cage in the park. Remnants of the care are still there. All I recall is being afraid of the bear and forbidden to go near the cage.
The community potluck at the Lame Ox Fest was really good and well-attended. The 4-H clubs held a dessert auction providing some fun and competitive bidding.
I believe a lot of people learned things about Clintonville history that they had not heard before. My husband and family members who accompanied me from Antigo to the festival commented on the excellent cooperation between the churches and the city to put on this free family event.
Congratulations are in order for all who helped. It was a delight from the start when we were greeted by two helpful young teens until we left for home tired and full of good food.
Thanks once again to my hometown.
Kay Kuester Doran,
Antigo
