To the editor:
Sheriff Wright didn’t ask me to write this article, nor did I tell him that I was going to. Why would a sheriff from a different county write an article for Sheriff Wright?
Being sheriff is a very powerful position in county government. The sheriff’s position is the lead law enforcement officer in the county. The sheriff can stand for what is right or can be influenced by other people in the county. Sheriff Wright stands for what is right. Some people think that when the sheriff stands for what is right, it costs money. Law enforcement does cost money, but when people call, they expect to be given the service. Sheriff Wright understands that, and he knows how to carry that out.
In January 2007, I had the opportunity to serve as sheriff in Green Lake County. I, along with 23 other new sheriffs, attended training in Madison. I remember walking into the classroom and picking out a certain person who I felt matches me and who believes and does the same things that I do. I walked over to an individual in that classroom, and we introduced ourselves. That person was Sheriff Wright, and we have been friends ever since.
Over the past 7½ years, Sheriff Wright and I have attended many schools, conferences and seminars together. In 2009, we attended the National Sheriff’s Institute in Longmont, Colorado. We attended with three other sheriffs from Wisconsin.
We grew closer as sheriffs from all over the United States in that week of training, but one thing that really stood out was the dedication and the commitment that Sheriff Wright had for Shawano County. Our instructors were very impressed with the five of us and how we grew as leaders.
Sheriff Wright is a leader. He defends his department, supports his men and women, and always looks out for the citizens of Shawano County.
I know Sheriff Wright can’t please everyone, but he’ll do his best and make the right decisions, as he has done in the past 7½ years, and will continue to strive for the goals he has set.
Your sheriff, Randy Wright, has never lost focus of his mission and his goals in becoming the sheriff of Shawano County. I am proud to have Sheriff Wright as a friend and a brother sheriff in law enforcement.
