Joseph “Reub” Hyland, 85, Oconto Falls, died peacefully Saturday evening, July 12, 2014, at home with his family present. He was born March 21, 1929, in Kingsford, Michigan, to Joseph A. and Caroline (Marik) Hyland.
Joe attended Kingsford public schools, graduating from high school with the Class of 1947.
On March 22, 1951, he married Arlene Secrist. Joe served in the U.S. Army and was engaged in combat during the Korean War. The couple returned to Oconto Falls in 1953, and Joe worked at the Scott Paper Co. for over 40 years. It was during this time of his life Joe attended classes at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College to further his education as a millwright and was known as a skilled and gifted mechanic.
Joe served on the Oconto Falls Water & Light Commission for many years and also for two terms on the City Council.
Following retirement, Joe enjoyed traveling with his wife and family to numerous parts of the United States and annual fishing trips to Canada. He enjoyed fishing, caring for his garden, reading to enhance his knowledge, as well as feeding and watching the birds. Joe will be lovingly remembered for his constant devotion to his family.
Survivors are his two children, Susan (Charlie Mineau) Hyland and Tom (Laurie) Hyland, all of Green Bay; five grandchildren, “JJ” (Jenni) and Michael (Amber) Hyland, Ivy and Maggie Okoniewski, Jacqueline Hyland; two great-grandchildren, Alexander and Romy Hyland; two sisters, Joan (Clark) Linn, Kingsford, Michigan, and Patricia (Bob) Lindholm, Iron Mountain, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlene, in 2011; one son, John Hyland; four brothers, John, Jim, Bob and Bill Hyland; and one sister, Dorothy Smith.
Visitation with the urn present will take place after noon Saturday, July 19, at Jones Funeral Service in Oconto Falls until the time of service. A service of remembrance will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
