Herbert C. Westphal

Herbert C. Westphal, 78, of Shawano, died on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, at Pine Manor Health Care Center, Clintonville. He was born on Aug. 19, 1937, in Shawano, son of the late Clarence and Anne (Ainsworth) Westphal. Herb married Marlene Wendt on May 11, 1963. Herb graduated from Shawano High School in 1954 and worked for BJ Mares in Bear Creek before serving his country in the U.S. Army. After finishing his service, he worked at Appleton Papers, retiring in 1999. Herb was a former member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Appleton, and a current member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Cecil. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, and playing cards. Herb and Marlene enjoyed traveling together and spending their winters in Florida. Herb was an avid Packers and Brewers fan. He enjoyed entertaining his friends and family at their home on Shawano Lake. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He always took great pride watching his grandchildren’s sporting events. Herb is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Marlene; his four children, Cheryl (Timothy) McVey, Dawn (Mark) Mahn, Cindy (Curt) Johannes and Timothy (Jennifer) Westphal; nine grandchildren, Eric (Lauren) Forseth, Jessica Forseth, Jason (Sandy) Parmer, Maggie McVey, Samantha Mahn, Emily and Alysa Johannes, Reid and Walker Westphal; five great-grandchildren, Hayden, Brynlee, Christy, Stacy and Jason II; two sisters, Jean Siebold and Carol (Jim) Dillenburg; a brother, Orville (Judy) Westphal; and three sisters-in-law, Denie Westphal, Carol (Glenn) Westphal and Judie Wendt. He is further survived by several nieces, nephews and good friends. Herb was further preceded in death by two brothers Donnie and Robert; two infant brothers, Allen and Harvey; sister, Mary; father- and mother-in-law, Peter and Gertrude Wendt; two brothers-in-law, Richard Siebold and Lawrence Wendt; and a stepgrandson, Joseph Matthew Parmer. Mass of Christian burial for Herb will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 500 W. Marquette St., Appleton, with the Rev. Thomas J. Farrell officiating. Visitation will be held at the church Monday from 9-11 a.m. Full military honors will follow. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established. Herb’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire staff at Pine Manor for all of their care and compassion this past year.
