Hawks, Chargers advance to within a game of state tournament

March 6 Shawano 49, Marinette 39 Shawano moved one game closer to the state tournament with a 49-39 win over Marinette in the Division 2 semifinal game. After a rugged and low-scoring first half, the Marines took a 16-13 lead into halftime. After the break, the Hawks relaxed and hit some shots to take the lead and never look back. Wittenberg-Birnamwood 55, Freedom 39 The Chargers kept their perfect record intact with a 55-39 win over Freedom in the Division 3 semifinals. Rory Salvesen led Wittenberg-Birnamwood with 18 points, followed by Faith Resch and Melaina Granquist with 13 each. Salvesen connected on a trio of 3-pointers. “We played a heck of a game start to finish tonight. So proud of this group,” coach Nick Mechelke said. “We shot 50% from the floor tonight, and that’s awesome. Freedom plays great defense; we just shot really well from the floor. Defensively, we played very hard and smart. We didn’t let Freedom get a lot of easy buckets tonight.” Granquist pulled down 12 rebounds. Harper Rogowski and Resch each notched one assist. Resch recorded three steals. St. Mary Catholic 57, Bonduel 35 St. Mary Catholic jumped all over Bonduel in the first half as they cruised to a 57-35 win in the WIAA Division 4 Sectional 2 semifinal game. St. Mary Catholic held a 35-14 lead at halftime and edged the Bears 22-21 after the break. Bonduel, which was 12-2 and in second place in the Central Wisconsin Each Conference, was 21-6 overall. Audrey Weier led the Bears with an average of 10.7 points per game, followed by Julianna Jacobs with 8.6 and Tatum Sporisky with 6.0. Jacobs and Weier each averaged 5.8 rebounds per game. Weier dished out 4.0 assists per game, while Sporisky averaged 3.4 per game.
