With a 1-0 win over Seymour on Wednesday, the Shawano Community High School girls soccer team secured the third seed in the Bay Conference tournament, which begins Thursday.
The Hawks (10-6, 5-2 Bay) beat Seymour (3-7-1, 3-4) on a Morgan Klitzke goal in the 78th minute of the match. Klitzke got the goal off a deflection of Sarah Dickmann’s free kick.
“It kind of bounced in front of the keeper and she didn’t play it out of the air,” Shawano coach Bob Croschere said. “Morgan came in and took the ball and put it in the goal.”
Freshman goalie Carlie Hinnefeld preserved the tie with about 10 minutes left in the match.
“She kind of pushed one out of the goal that almost could have went in,” Croschere said. “She stretched for it, fell into the goal herself and pushed it out. That was a nice save that kept us in the game and helped us win it. “
Hinnefeld, who had six saves on the day, has solidified her spot as the Hawks’ goalie as the team prepares to make a push in the Bay tournament.
The match began Monday but was called at halftime because of rain. The two teams resumed play Wednesday, getting the game in before the conference seeded the teams for the tournament.
The win gives Shawano a home match against sixth-seeded Denmark (5-7-1, 1-5-1) Thursday.
Shawano beat Denmark 5-1 on May 15, but Croschere said he expects the Vikings will be tougher this time around.
“We beat them the first time, but I know they were missing a couple of people with other commitments,” he said. “It might be a tougher game this time.”
West De Pere (11-1-2, 6-0-1) earned the top seed, with New London (5-6-1, 5-1-1) taking second. Marinette (7-3-2) is the fourth seed, Seymour is fifth, Hortonville (2-11, 1-6) seventh and Luxemburg-Casco (2-10-2, 0-6-1) eighth.
Shawano and Marinette finished the regular season tied with 10 conference points each. The Hawks earned the higher seed thanks to a regular-season win against the Marines on May 6.
Round 2 of the tournament will be played Tuesday, with Round 3 on May 29.
“I think we’re going in at a good place right here,” Croschere said. “We’ve won four straight. We’re clicking right now.”
