Sunday’s events at Shawano Speedway did not have the drama of Saturday night’s championships, but wreckage and fun more than made up for it.
The three-in-one show featured spectator eliminators, demolition football and trailer races, a new event for the speedway.
Dave Stoffer, racing in the V8 division, and Nate Michonski, in the 4-cylinder division, came out on top in the spectator eliminators.
Stoffer bested a field of 16 cars in the V8 division in his 1971 Chevy Camaro. Bo Schroeder took second place.
Michonski beat a field of four cars in the 4-cylinder division. Brenden Weaver was second.
“It was excellent, real good racing,” Stoffer said from victory lane. “We had real good turnout.”
Stoffer, who used to race SportMods at Shawano Speedway and owns Cody Hudson’s car, said he’s been to every spectator eliminator race held at the speedway.
“We built this car so I could drive a little bit this year over the winter,” Stoffer said.
Stoffer said the track was perfect to start the day, but he had to battle a slick surface later on.
“The track was really good when we started, but it got really dry-slick by the end,” Stoffer said. “It was an all-right track.”
Michonski returned for the trailer races later in the day.
“After spending 10 years at this place racing stock cars, this is going to be a little different,” Michonski said.
Michonski drove a van with a Fiberglas boat in the trailer races.
“I think our goal is to wreck some stuff,” he said just before the event.
According to Dale Hodkiewicz, Shawano Speedway president, the new event ended up being one of bigger draws; he wished he could take credit for coming up with it.
“We saw it someplace else, so we steal the ideas,” Hodkiewicz said. “It’s as simple as that.”
Sandwiched between those two events was demolition football, which consisted of several demolition cars trying to push a large tank to one of the end zones in the front straightaway.
Both teams turned out to be defensive powerhouses, though, and the event ended in a 0-0 draw.
