After just being ordained a deacon, Edward Looney will spend his summer at Sacred Heart Parish in Shawano assisting the Rev. Luke Ferris.
“I will alleviate him of some of his duties,” Looney said.
Looney’s duties will include taking Holy Communion to shut-ins, the hospital and nursing homes. Looney will also preach at one Mass each weekend. Occasionally, he will help out at St. Martin of Tours Church in Cecil.
Looney, 25, who will be here until Aug. 17, will also perform baptisms, marriages and funerals.
“I can’t believe I can do the things I do,” he said. “I’ve been studying for so long.”
After the summer Looney will return to Mundelein Seminary in Illinois. He is scheduled to be ordained a priest on June 6, 2015. After that he will be assigned to a parish.
Looney is a graduate of Oconto High School. He attended one semester of college before going to the seminary.
“I thought about it since my childhood,” he said. “It became more clear in high school. It’s a lifelong commitment.”
He was influenced in his faith by his frequent visits to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Champion and has authored several books about the shrine.
Looney is the son of Nancy Looney and Conrad Hill, and was active at Holy Trinity Parish in Oconto. When he has time, he enjoys running.
