Cake funds will go to cancer research
Kayla Clark, a 13-year-old member of the Belle Plaine 4-H Club, made a pink breast cancer ribbon for her entry in the cake decorating project at the fair.
She plans to donate half of what she makes at the cake sale Friday to breast cancer research. “I am proud of her for her willingness to give up some funds for a good cause,” said her mother, Mary Clark.
Mom explained they found the cake design on the Internet, and her husband, Doug, suggested the donation to Kayla. “She thought that was a cool idea since she knows someone with breast cancer and was all for it,” Mary Clark said.

Cream puff count ahead of 2012
Wolf River Harmony had a slower start than usual to cream puff sales Wednesday, but sold twice as many puffs Thursday.
Officials estimate that about 400 cream puffs were sold Thursday, bringing the total to around 600. In 2012, the cream puff count was at 473 at the end of Thursday.

Fair gets federal, state visitors
U.S. Rep. Reid Ribble, R-Sherwood, and state Sen. Robert Cowles, R-Allouez, paid a visit to the Shawano County Fair on Thursday, hanging around the county Republican Party’s booth and meeting with constituents. Cowles said he enjoys coming to the fair each year to talk with constituents and see what the youth have done through their exhibits.
“Culturally, that’s why the fairs started,” Cowles said.
Ribble echoed Cowles’ enthusiasm for meeting people, noting that more people are recognizing him and coming up to him now that he’s in his second term in Congress.
Both Ribble and Cowles pointed out that they had to resist the temptation of the fair food booths, especially Cowles, who was in the middle of enjoying a slice of apple pie.
“The food is just too tempting,” Ribble said.

Phone donations going to military
Visitors to the Shawano County Fair this week are being asked to bring their no longer used cell phones to the Republican Party of Shawano County booth inside the commercial building. The cellphones will be donated to our military personnel overseas.

Cosmic Bingo makes its debut
Thursday night saw the addition of a new twist to the traditional Bingo offering, called Cosmic Bingo.
“Black lights and disc jockey and all the stuff going on at the same time while they’re playing Bingo,” Shawano County Agricultural Society President Dale Hodkiewicz said. “Looking forward to seeing what that’s going to bring.”
Cosmic Bingo will be offered in the bingo tent from 9-11 p.m. through Sunday.
“I’ve never done it before, so I’m excited to see what goes on,” Hodkiewicz said.

Prime beef
The 4-H Beef Show was held Thursday in the Coliseum
“We’ve got some really excellent beef cattle here, especially in the steer classes,” said Joe Stellato, Shawano County UW-Extension 4-H coordinator. “I think you’ll find they’re as good as you’ll see almost anywhere.”
The Grand Champion Beef Steer was won by India Tauchen of Bonduel. Race McClone of Bonduel took second place.
“We had some real fine steers at the steer show,” Stellato said.
Stellato said there were also some surprises, with kids winning top prizes that hadn’t placed that high in the past.
“Experience is starting to come to the top,” he said. “It’s good to see.”
