To promote heart health and wellness, Community Memorial Hospital will hold its annual Heart Fair from 6-9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at all CMH locations in Oconto County.
The event features low-cost heart-health screenings at CMH clinics and educational offerings from cardiology and other health care professionals at Community Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls.
A person’s risk for heart disease is determined by many factors, most of which can be controlled. According to the U.S. National Institute of Health, risk factors that can be controlled are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, being overweight and being physically inactive. Risk factors that cannot be changed include a person’s age and family history. Each risk factor greatly increases a person’s chance of developing heart disease.
Screenings are available by appointment at CMH clinics for $10 and include cholesterol, glucose, lipid panel, blood pressure, body mass index, weight and a follow-up presentation with cardiologist Dr. Raul Verma.
Stroke screening packages are available at CMH Oconto Falls for $75 and include all Heart Fair screenings, carotid ultrasound, abdominal ultrasound, ankle brachial index and a same-day consult with a physician.

The Heart Fair event at Community Memorial Hospital features educational booths with Prevea cardiologist Dr. Simil Gala and other health care professionals answering questions about heart health, stroke, vascular health, medications and sleep apnea. All Heart Fair participants will receive an invitation to attend a free follow-up presentation with Verma, who will answer questions about screening results at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 15.
