The Bowler/Gresham high school football team continued to roll a path of destruction through the Great 8 Conference with a 46-6 win Saturday over Abundant Life Christian.
Abundant Life’s only score came on the Cats’ first drive, when a pitch from quarterback Thomas Kazik was grabbed by a Challengers player and run in for a score.
After that, the Bowler/Gresham defense did its job, holding Abundant Life (1-2) scoreless the rest of the way. The Cats’ defense has yet to allow a score this season.
“The defense has done an outstanding job shutting people down this year,” Bowler/Gresham coach Ralph Smith said. “I can’t say enough about these guys. They play together.”
The defense managed to get four sacks, one each by Joe Serrano, Quentin Rondeau, Jay Onesti and Jared Ricket.
On offense, Bowler/Gresham (3-0) rolled up 46 points, led by Zach Olson’s two touchdowns and 143 yards on 16 carries.
Cody Montez added 13 carries for 111 yards and had a touchdown. He also converted two 2-point conversions for the Cats. Kazik went 4 of 5 for 15 yards and had a touchdown passing and another rushing. He also threw two 2-point conversions and ran in another.
The coach said his offense has been playing consistently.
“It was hard this week because we played (last) Thursday,” Smith said. “So we had a long break. That kind of hurt us. We were kind of slow getting going today. Once they got it going, once they figured it out, we got going pretty good.”
Bowler/Gresham quarterback Brandon Miller, who has been splitting time with Kazik, had to leave the game with an injured knee.
“We didn’t have to make too many adjustments,” Smith said. “Thomas has been doing a great job at quarterback back there. He’s been there before. There’s some of the offense that we didn’t run today because Thomas hasn’t gotten enough reps at the position, but we really didn’t change our offense much as all.”
The coach was hopeful Miller would be back this season.
The fast start has expectations rising for the Cats ahead of Friday’s match-up with Gibraltar, which is also 3-0.
“Three solid wins kind of got the monkey off our back,” Smith said. “We’ve got Gibraltar coming here Friday night. Two 3-0 teams going at it. They’re a high-scoring offense also. Hopefully, our defense can come through and do what we have to do to shut them down.”
