The Nicolet Oconto Retired Teachers Association in July honored Carol Burns for 15-plus years of membership in Wisconsin Retired Educators Association and NORTA.
Burns was born and raised on a farm in the Berlin area. She went to a one-room country school until eighth grade and graduated from Berlin High School. Burns attended Stout Institute, now University of Wisconsin-Stout, graduating with a degree in home economics teacher education and taught at Sheboygan Farnsworth Middle School for two years.
She got married and moved to East Detroit, Michigan, then returned to Wisconsin, living in Hartford and teaching at a junior high school. In 1988 she moved to Townsend and taught home economics and health at Wabeno High School.
After retiring, Burns has remained active in NORTA and other community organizations.
Her two daughters are graduates of UW-Madison, and her son, UW-Milwaukee.
