Bears fall short against Thunderbirds

A failed 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter sealed the Bonduel High School football team’s 21-19 loss to Central Wisconsin Conference-8 foe Iola-Scandinavia Friday night in Iola. The Bears scored on a 22-yard Colton Dobratz touchdown throw to Zach Zernicke to cut Iola-Scandinavia’s lead to 21-19. Bonduel (2-2, 1-2 CWC-8 opted to go for two, but running back Hunter VanderLinden was held out of the end zone. “In the end, we lost by two,” Bonduel coach James Westrich said. “I’m really proud of the way our kids played. They didn’t give up. We fought to the end, we just came up a little short tonight.” VanderLinden had a 22-yard touchdown run earlier in the quarter. Iola-Scandinavia took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and went up 14-0 in the second before Dobratz found Danny Tauchen for a 32-yard touchdown to make the game 14-7 at halftime. VanderLinden finished with 22 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown. Dobratz went 10 for 24 for 125, two touchdowns and an interception. Zernicke caught three balls for 50 yards and a touchdown. Tauchen had two catches for 41 yards and a touchdown.
