I’m writing this on Mother’s Day. You might think I shouldn’t have time to be sitting at the computer on this special day. Well, the fact is, we had a lovely brunch with two of our children and grandchildren earlier today, and we visited our other daughter in Readstown on Friday and Saturday. So, that pretty much took care of the Mother’s Day weekend.
Flowers and cards are on display, and I have that contented feeling of a mother who knows her children are safe and happy. Having a good husband sitting in his recliner, reading the paper, completes the picture. I’m a happy camper.
I have to sneak one accolade in here for my cast of “The Dixie Swim Club.” These women were a joy to work with and did such a fabulous job for me. I hope you came and enjoyed it. Thanks to my assistant director, Cheryl Folkerts, and my Dixie ladies: Jodi Angeli, Mary Madsen, Sandra Wehmeyer, Jennifer Blake, and Denise Riley. Group hug!
Rehearsals have begun for “Suessical the Musical,” under the direction of Brandon Byng. We drove by the Mielke Arts Center this afternoon, on Mother’s Day, and the cast was there. Musicals are obviously more involved than a straight play and take many rehearsals to get ready for production. The show is scheduled for July 11-13 and 18-20, which means exactly two months from today, “Suessical the Musical” will open. Lots of music to sing, dances to choreograph, costumes to sew and dialogue to learn. The large cast will portray characters of Dr. Suess such as Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Sour Kangeroo, Mayzie La Bird and JoJo, the imaginative child. It will be a fun, crazy romp for children and adults.
Our arts and crafts fair takes place on Sunday, July 27. Cheryl Folkerts, the chairperson, usually has about 85 artists and crafters set up in the Mielke Park. Food will again be available, with the popular “walking tacos” again being offered as part of the menu. The fair hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with admission being a suggested donation of $2. We always get a great turnout, even in the rain!
The Shawano County Arts Council, which is the support for all the events in and around the Mielke Arts Center, needs your support. Won’t you consider joining as a supportive member? Your membership entitles you to vote at the annual meeting in January (and attend all meetings, if you choose) and receive $1 off your admission for events when presenting your membership card. More importantly, you will know that you are helping us continue to bring you community theater, art fairs and music festivals here in Shawano. Let us know, too, if you are willing to volunteer in some way. We always need ushers, help with costumes, set construction and more. The art fair and music festival always need gate keepers and other volunteers. We do need you!
