The city of Shawano will celebrate Arbor Day at 10 a.m. April 30 at Smalley Park, 211 Riverside Drive, Shawano.
The public is invited to attend the celebration. Members of the Shawano Tree Advisory Committee and city officials will recognize Friend of Nature Award winner Mike Bohm as this year’s award recipient.
The Friend of Nature Award is given annually to individuals and businesses who have shown leadership and commitment to improving their properties by planting and protecting trees and landscape plants. The plantings on these properties enhance the natural qualities of the properties for improved natural beauty, and by providing shade, aesthetics, bird habitat, improved air quality and improved stormwater runoff retention.
In recognition of this award, the property will have a Nature’s Friend sign posted in the yard for public viewing and a tree planted in their honor provided by the public works department.
Fourth and fifth grade students from Olga Brener Intermediate School, St. James Lutheran School and Sacred Heart Catholic School will be attending the celebration and assist with the planting of the tree in Smalley Park.
Shawano is celebrating 31 years as a Tree City USA national member and a 13th year Growth Award. The city is also celebrating its 22nd year as a Tree Line USA award recipient with support of Shawano Municipal Utilities. Patricia Lindquist, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources regional representative, will present the awards to the city.
