Shawano police Thursday caught two alleged burglars in the act after responding to a suspicious person complaint on South Main Street.
Kody R. Koeller, 17, and James C. Thompson, 19, both of Shawano, were charged Friday with felony counts of burglary and misdemeanor counts of theft and resisting an officer.
They could each face a maximum possible sentence of 12½ years in prison and a $25,000 fine if convicted of the felony charges.
Police received a call just after 11 p.m. about two persons seen riding bikes up to a building in the 500 block of South Main Street and climbing onto the rooftop, according to the criminal complaint.
Police heard movement from the rooftop of some sheds behind the building. One of the subjects, later identified as Thompson, flipped over a fence, according to the criminal complaint, and took off running. He was taken into custody after a foot chase of several blocks that took police through yards and over fences.
Koeller was found by the Police Department K-9 unit hiding in a shed, according to the complaint.
Shawano County sheriff’s deputies also assisted with the incident.
The pair allegedly stole several bottles of liquor during the burglary of an apartment.
According to the complaint, Thompson later told police he was at a party in the city and when they ran out of liquor he said he knew where he could get some more.
Thompson was ordered held Friday on a $2,000 cash bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court on Wednesday.
Koeller is free on a $1,000 signature bond and is due back in court for an adjourned initial appearance Sept. 3.
