The Shawano/Bonduel high school girls swim team might have gotten off on the wrong foot Thursday against defending Bay Conference champion Sturgeon Bay, but the Hawks finished strong to earn a 96-72 victory at home.
“Last year, we lost to them by nine points,” Shawano/Bonduel coach Sharon Hanson said. “It was a big win.”
Shawano/Bonduel would have led the meet 10-4 after the first event, but an early start disqualified its 200-yard medley relay team, which had won. Instead, Sturgeon Bay got the eight first-place points, and tacked on two more for taking third, going ahead 10-4.
Sturgeon Bay added to its lead with a 1-2 finish in the 200 freestyle.
Senior Ali Hanson, a state qualifier in a year ago, started the comeback for Shawano/Bonduel, taking first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.49 seconds.
“She’s hitting pretty nice times for this early in the season,” said coach Hanson, who is Ali’s mother. “She’s very close already. That’s a good thing.”
Emme Quandt helped close the gap to within one point (39-38) by winning the 100 butterfly.
“That was a very big win for her,” Sharon Hanson said. “She knew she was going into that race with a person that has the same time as her. … So that was a big win for her, and she dropped a bunch of time.”
Shawano/Bonduel took the lead 49-44 by taking first, third and fourth in the 100 freestyle. Ali Hanson, who holds the school record in both freestyle events, finished first with a time of 53.61, beating out Sturgeon Bay’s Marissa Ehlers (57.60). Ailysh Tetting took third and Whitney Banker was fourth, giving the Hawks an 11-point boost.
Perhaps Ali Hanson’s best performance was in the 200 freestyle relay, where she erased an almost 2-second Sturgeon Bay lead in the final leg. She swam her leg in 24.32, which was faster than her 50 freestyle record of 24.35. Shawano/Bonduel (1:49.25) ended up beating Sturgeon Bay by 1.95 seconds in the event.
“We count on her to do that,” coach Hanson said. “That was a big turning point for our whole meet. Those relays are double points.”
Clare Martell, a junior two-time state qualifier, won the 100 breaststroke by 15.20 seconds.
Carlie Hinnefeld and Aiylsh Tetting got the two top spots in the 100 backstroke for the Hawks, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Tetting, Hinnefeld, Hanson and Alyssa Anker won that event.
Freshman Lydia Colon was injured, but Samantha Leiser moved up from junior varsity for the 200 and 500 freestyle events.
“That was a major part of us not having a scratch, which would have meant we lost points,” coach Hanson said. “She’s a sophomore, and she did a really good job.”
