About 102 people participated in the 10th annual Fishing for Fun Day on June 7 at Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya on Chute Pond.
The Oconto County University of Wisconsin-Extension Parenting Resource Center along with many volunteers hosted and sponsored the event.
Children received their very own fishing pole to encourage more fishing outings with their dad or adult male role model. Each child also had the opportunity to paint a hat or shirt to remember their special day.
The event is intended to encourage kids and adult males to have fun together and to bond. Research shows that children with active adult male role models receive benefits that children without involved fathers do not receive. Some of the benefits are good grades, positive problem solving skills, good health, close friendships as well as compassion and empathy.
Sponsors of the event were YMCA Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya, Oconto River Watershed Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Red Squirrel’s Sportsmen, Breed Sportsman Club, Oconto County Sportsman Alliance, Suring Sportsmen Club, Cabela’s, Mills Fleet Farm, Saputo Cheese Corp., Wichman’s BP Station and Zebco Famiy Fishing Program.
