The month of December has flown by while I was distracted by other things.
First, I had/have a moisture problem in my shower area. The wall where the shower head is coming out of is turning dark. I assumed it was splash back or something like it. I made some calls, no one came. I went online a few times, and that raised a few calls. Someone came and said it was a leak behind the wall. This problem is on hold until early next year.
Next was the 10-hour power outage the night before Thanksgiving. Somehow, my computer, which has been limping along since spring, got worse, and the outage seems to have killed the sound. I wouldn’t think that I would miss that, but there are times when sound is good, such as watching a video clip on a website or Facebook. Oh, I can still watch it, just can’t hear anything.
DISH Network was the next problem. I called and ordered a new remote, because my 10-year-old one was no longer fully working. It arrived, and on a Saturday, one of my sons came to try to get the new one to work with the receiver and TV. It didn’t work, so we called DISH to talk to a tech. More than an hour later, the tech said the receiver must be so old that it didn’t work with the remote, or the remote was defective. So we set up an appointment for Wednesday for someone to come and bring a new receiver.
After hanging up, we discovered the old remote no longer worked either. So from Saturday to Wednesday, I was limited to one TV station. To change channels I had to go in the basement and push a button on the receiver. The DISH guy was to come at 9:15 on that Wednesday morning, but no one came. I called, and someone came at 12:30 and was here until after 5:30, because he had to move the DISH, and on and on. He did a good job, but what a long and wasted day. Funny thing is, now that I have TV, I seldom find something I want to watch.
The following Monday, my van decided it needed attention. I wrote about that last week, so you know most of the details. All I can say is I have a renewed liking for that van. I discovered that its seat is perfect for my back, and all of the things such as cruise control and automatic lights are working.
Now that all of the things in my life are taken care of for the most part, I can turn my mind to Christmas. While with the help of two granddaughters, I put up Christmas decorations outside right after Thanksgiving, it wasn’t until this week that anything went up inside the house.
The tree is still in the basement, as are the decorations to put on it. The cookies are not baked, but I have hopes for the 20th, if my granddaughters are able to come. For the past few years, I have said I was going to cut back, but this year, I really am cutting back. I won’t make as many cookies, cutting down to four kinds, and only doing single batches, except for the peanut butter ones, as they are always favorites for the grandkids.
Some of the room decorations will become gifts this year, as I will let family pick what they like as a memory from grandma’s house. Plus I have pictures from when they were small that I think they would appreciate.
I love traditions, and have found it hard to change what and how things are done. However, there really does come a time when the past must become a memory, and the present a reality.
Besides, Isaiah 9:6 tells us the real reason for Christmas: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
