Local outdoor enthusiasts braved the brisk February chill Feb. 22 for the Shawano Pathways winter hike at the Maple Hills Recreation Area.

Despite temperatures in the low 20s and a biting wind, about 15 hikers gathered to explore the scenic landscape. Once under the shelter of the woods, the group found the conditions perfect for trekking.

To ensure safety, six volunteers scouted the trails the day before, finding them crunchy but safe for those with proper footgear.

Participants utilized traction devices like YakTrax to navigate the variable terrain, with Shawano Pathways providing extra gear to ensure everyone could participate in the two guided hikes, which included a 90-minute excursion on the winter-only Orange Trail. After warming up with hot chocolate at the “open bar,” the group celebrated a successful day on the trails.

Shawano Pathways now invites the public to the final winter hike of the season at 9:30 a.m. March 7 at the Sugar Shack trails, N7061 Ash Road, where local maple syrup will be available for purchase. Variable hike distances will be offered.

Arrive at least 15 minutes early to register and get your gear on. Participants should bring their own snowshoes and water; however, if there is no snow, hikers are encouraged to wear cleats or YakTrax over their boots.

As weather can cause cancellations, watch for updates on the group’s Facebook page or the website at www.shawanopathways.org. For questions, text Matty at 715-304-9796 or email 28degreesandsnowing@gmail.com.
