Change is in the air at the Shawano County Landfill, but consumers shouldn’t notice any significant changes, officials said.
Late last year, the Shawano County Board approved a resolution approving the closure of Unit 5 of Phase 2 of the landfill at the end of 2025.
Effective Dec. 31, 2025, the landfill will no longer bury waste, with the entire operation transitioning solely to a transfer station. That’s mostly the case now, except for one customer.
Also, when the landfill closes, the county will exit the landfill business, and the operation will be run by the city of Shawano only.
City Administrator Eddie Sheppard said the general public won’t see any difference after the landfill closes.
“Right now, we only accept dust waste from Aarrowcast, and we’re working with them on the closure,” he said. “Everything else brought to the landfill is transferred to another site, and that will be the case when it closes next year.”
Sheppard said that in addition to Aarrowcast, the landfill is most often used by contractors and commercial haulers, with some individuals also dropping off waste. All of this material is then taken elsewhere.
Shawano County Highway Department employees recently hauled in 18,000 cubic yards of clay that will be used to cap the landfill when it closes.
“We have a clay borrow site in the Town of Belle Plaine where we picked up the clay,” said Grant Bystol, county highway commissioner. “We need about 34,000 cubic yards. We stopped at 18,000 this year, because we need to prepare the trucks for winter (snow removal and salting). We’ll get the rest next year.”
Earlier this fall, the Solid Waste Management Board voted to add a 3% fee to all credit card users of the landfill.
The landfill pays a 3% credit card transaction fee, with about 12% of all transactions being credit cards. That equals about $12,000 a year. Those fees will now be passed on to the users.
The landfill, 1099 Rusch Road, is open year-round Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
