Sam Falck finished fourth to lead the Bonduel High School boys cross-country team to a sectional championship Saturday at the WIAA Division 3 sectional at Standing Rock Park in Stevens Point.
BHS senior Mallory Mews finished seventh in the girls race to qualify for the state meet for the third time.
“It feels awesome,” Falck said. “I’m just pumped that we get to go to state again for the second year, get to have that awesome experience of going to state all over again.”
“We won conference this year and now we’ve won the sectional. Things are coming together,” Bonduel coach James Watry said. “It just shows that when kids work hard and believe in what you’re trying to do, you can be successful.”
The Bears were certainly that, taking first in the boys race with a score of 82 to beat out second-place Laconia by just eight points.
Four of the Bonduel runners finished in the top 20, led by Falck’s time of 17 minutes, 10.2 seconds. Isaac Palmer clocked in at 17:39.20 to take sixth. Travis Wollenberg was 10th and Austin Marcks was 20th.
The Bears’ fifth runner, Bryce Robaidek, may have been the difference on the day.
Robaidek finished 42nd overall, finishing in 19:41.90 and cutting 25 seconds off his previous best time.
“We all did really good, but Bryce really stepped it up,” Falck said.
Robaidek, a senior, was running in his final high school race, since he will be unable to make Saturday’s state meet.
“It was a fantastic way for him to end his high school career,” Watry said.
Falck said he and his teammates had to adjust to the course, which was new to the Bonduel runners.
“We’ve never been here before,” he said. “The temperature was nice, besides of a little bit of a wind. Great day for running.”
Mews finished in 15:51.10 to take seventh.
“I cried as soon as I crossed the finish line,” Mews said. “It’s my dream way to finish up cross-country, to finish at the state meet. It’s a lot of emotions that hit me at once.”
Mews said she is excited that her mother will be able to see her race one more time.
“My mom couldn’t make it today, so I told her that I wanted her to see me race one last time. That was the goal,” Mews said.
Mews finished 14th at state in 2011 and 47th in 2010.
The Bonduel girls team took fifth. Oshkosh Lourdes Academy won the girls race.
The state meet will be held at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. The girls Division 3 race is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. The boys Division 3 race begins at 1:15 p.m.
