Longtime Bonduel resident Doug Bartels will serve as the parade marshal for the village’s annual Fourth of July parade.
Bartels graduated from high school in 1962 and went directly into the military. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
He enlisted and served in the Army for three years and then he reenlisted in the Air Force for another 4 years. He completed three overseas deployments that included two armed conflicts and one peacetime deployment.
Bartels graduated for University of Wisconsin-Stout with with dual degrees in industrial technology and vocational rehabilitation counseling. He worked as a rehabilitation counselor for the state for 17 years.
He and his wife, Carol, were at-home caregivers for two adults with disabilities, in their home, during the same time that they were raising their three children, Denise, Cara and Dan.
Bartels and his family moved to Bonduel in 1978. He began serving as an emergency medical responder and continues doing so today.
He also worked for the Shawano ambulance service and helped out in the emergency room at the hospital when there was a need.
The couple also operated a day care in their home and continue to volunteer throughout the community.
The Independence Day celebration starts with the traditional parade down the streets of Bonduel and continues at Village Park, 300 E. Park St., with baseball games, live music, food and drink, and fireworks.
The parade will step off at 11 a.m. from Bonduel High School, proceed east to Washington Street and then to Village Park.
Live music at the park will be performed from 1-5 p.m. and again from 5:30-9 p.m.
A bicycle raffle will be held at 3 p.m..
