Arnold “Arnie” Martin, 94, of Oconto Falls, was called home to eternal life on Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Arnold was born Aug. 24, 1919, to the late Gottlieb and Matilda (Zellmer) Martin in the town of Gillett.
He was a graduate of Oconto Falls High School and served with the U.S. Air Force in England and France during World War II. On Nov. 24, 1945, he married Irma Walters at St. John Lutheran Church in Gillett.
Arnie attended St. Norbert College and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in pharmacy in 1950. After employment at pharmacies in De Pere and Sturgeon Bay, he came to Oconto Falls to the Charles Raymond Pharmacy.
In 1963 he opened his own drug store with the assistance of his help-mate, Irma, and operated it until his retirement in 1988. Irma was his bookkeeper and helper for this entire period. They enjoyed camping, golfing and traveling after retirement.
Arnie was a member of the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association, a charter member of River Island Golf Club and a member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir and served on the church council and as an usher. He was also a member of the Green Bay Baylander Barbershop Chorus with his son, John, for 18 years.
Survivors include his son, John (fiancée Mary Watermolen) Martin; numerous nieces and nephews, especially his niece Carol Krieser and spouse, Dan, whom he regarded as a second son; and his “adopted niece,” Carol Bunn.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma, on Jan. 6, 1996; his sister, Dorothy “Kid” Bunn; two brothers, Gus Martin and Herb Martin, and two nephews, Jerry Bunn and Randal Zahn.
Visitation was held at Grace Lutheran Church in Oconto Falls on Friday, July 11, from 6-9 p.m. Visitation continued at church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the funeral service at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Larry Bong officiating. Arnie will be interred in Woodlawn Cemetery in Oconto Falls.
