Alice M. Metzler, 79, Green Bay, formerly of Oconto Falls, died Thursday morning, Oct. 24, 2013, at Woodside Rehabilitation Center. She was born May 23, 1934, in Oconto Falls to Jacob “Jake” and Evelyn (Lambert) Bohl.
Alice grew up in Oconto Falls, where she attended St. Anthony Catholic Grade School and graduated from Oconto Falls High School with the Class of 1952. Following graduation, she worked at the Gambles store and then in the lab at Scott Paper Co. On Aug. 7, 1954, she married Robert “Bob” Metzler at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Oconto Falls. Alice called Oconto Falls home for all of her life. She started out as an assistant librarian before eventually serving for over 20 years as the Oconto Falls Library librarian. She was a lifelong member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, where she once led a Madonna Bible Study Group.
Alice was also active in her community, where she was involved in the Oconto Falls Women’s Club, Oconto County Historical Society and helped to organize the very first Falls Fun Fest.
Along with other concerned citizens in Oconto Falls, she helped to organize the building of the city’s new library. She also volunteered for the Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of the Library and took a leadership role in a group of small town libraries because of her strong belief in the value of good reading material and habits.
Her family includes her loving and devoted husband of 59 years, Bob Metzler, Green Bay; their five children, Mike (Karen) Metzler, Lindstrom, Minn., Annette (Tom) Sanderson, Frisco, Texas, Mark (Cindy) Metzler, Coleman, Valerie Ledterman, Euless, Texas, and Tony (Julie) Metzler, Pardeeville; her 10 grandchildren of whom she was so proud, Nic Metzler, Kaitlin (Shady) Taha and Alex Metzler, Carrie Sanderson, M.D., Holly (Joe) Pyzik and Michael Sanderson, Andrew and Crystal Metzler, Connor and Grayson Metzler; one great-grandchild, Raymond Taha; one brother, Kenneth (Judy) Bohl, Lakewood; two sisters, Jan Steinhorst and Sue Bohl, both of Green Bay; two sisters-in-law, Millie Metzler, Oconto Falls; Carolyn Bohl, Green Bay; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Ruthie Abler; one brother, Robert Bohl; and infant daughter, Mary Metzler.
Visitation and a parish prayer service were held Sunday, Oct. 27, at Jones Funeral Service in Oconto Falls. Visitation continued Monday, Oct. 28, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Oconto Falls. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday at the church with the Rev. Joel Sember officiating. Cremation followed, with burial of the urn in the church cemetery.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund will be established at St. Anthony Church in Alice’s name.
The Metzler family would like to thank Woodside Rehabilitation Center, Bellin Hospital and Unity Hospice for the care and concern shown Alice during her illness.
