Youth hockey teams play at state tournaments

A pair of Shawano Hockey League Peewee teams and the Bantam team recently competed in state tournament games across the state.

The U12 Peewee A team went 2-1 March 7-8 at the Oshkosh YMCA.

On March 7, Shawano defeated Beaver Dam 7-4, then lost 8-1 to Marshfield. On March 8, the Hawks beat Amery 6-5.

The U12 Peewee B team had a 1-2 record March 7-8 in Rhinelander.

Local deer hunting chapters counting on annual banquets

A statewide organization based in Shawano that wants to promote deer hunting and other outdoors-related activities is looking for new members and new chapters.

Chuck Dallas, of Shawano, is president of the Wisconsin Deer Hunters Inc. board of directors and is past president of the group’s Shawano chapter.

Rice Lake girls have Shawano’s number again

Basketball fans in Shawano and Rice Lake got the matchup they wanted for a WIAA Division 2 girls sectional final.

The game, played March 7 in Stevens Point, featured a pair of University of Wisconsin recruits in Shawano’s Leah Nordin and Rice Lake’s Adaline Sheplee, and for the second season in a row, Sheplee led the Warriors to a trip to state with a win over Nordin and the Hawks.

Bonduel, Tigerton move on to sectionals

Bonduel 70, Iola-Scandinavia 65

All five Bonduel starters scored in double digits as the Bears held to defeat Iola-Scandinavia 70-65 and advance to WIAA sectional play.

Bonduel will play against Kewaunee on March 12 at Kaukauna.

Ice Bears win back-to-back state title

The Bay Area Ice Bears won their second straight state title and third in their last four years, but not before they held off a rally by the St. Croix Fusion, to earn a last-minute 5-4 victory March 7 at the Legacy20 Arena in Middleton.

Mosinee ends Chargers’ perfect 26-0 season

A loss to Xavier in a sectional final kept the Wittenberg-Birnamwood girls basketball team from making its first trip to state in program history last season.

This season turned out to be Mosinee’s turn, as it handed the Chargers a 58-53 loss March 5 in a WIAA Division 3 sectional semifinal at D.C. Everest High School in Weston.
